The Distinguished Flying Cross medal is awarded to any officer or enlisted person of the armed forces of the United States for heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. The heroism or achievement must be entirely distinctive, involving operations that are not routine. It is not awarded for sustained operational activities and flights. The DFC is the fourth highest award for heroism and the highest award for extraordinary aerial achievement.
The mission of the Super Sabre Society is to preserve the history of the F-100 Super Sabre and the men who flew the aircraft. Super Sabre Society Associate and Honorary members include those accepted for their contributions to the overall missions of the aircraft or to the mission of the Super Sabre Society.
In Memoriam:
"We toast our faithful comrades now fallen from the sky
And gently caught by God’s own hand To be with Him on high.
To dwell among the soaring clouds They knew so well before
From dawn patrol and victory roll At heaven’s very door.
And as we fly among them there We’re sure to hear their plea–
“Take care, my friend; watch your six, And do one more roll…Just for me.”
By Navy Captain Jerry Coffee (composed while a POW in Hanoi)
The National Air and Space Museum's Wall of Honor stands along a tree-lined walkway leading into the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. This permanent memorial recognizes individuals with a passion for flight, commemorating aviation pioneers such as the Wright brothers, Amelia Earhart, and Bessie Coleman, alongside space exploration legends like Neil Armstrong, John Glenn, and Jim Lovell, as well as countless military aviators who served their country.
FOIL #10 - "The People"
This airfoil, with a limited number of names from the various member categories of The Super Sabre Society, is dedicated to all those who flew F-100 aircraft or served her—and her multiple, global missions.
